My unique system explains grammar with a simple colour code using 8 basic colours for the 8 types of work that words perform in a sentence. You can visualize or hear your sentence make sense. These 15 chapters are filled with fun and facts for efficient learning.
Effectively, my colour system has been used for 20 terms: Seneca College, Ontario, for remedial English students in small group or individual, participatory and relevant assignments. To write correct and varied sentences, the students are placed in academic up-grading classes of grammar (parsing), spelling (phonics), vocabulary (dictionary usage), punctuation (rules) and other needed basics for writing successful reports and essays.
Chapter 1 begins with NOUNS which are coloured red, a bright colour as our names are important to us. The learners create a Family Tree of names, dates, towns and objects their relatives have, so they create a NOUN tree of persons, places and things. This page turns their writing workbooks into individual and valued books, sharing their heritages. Writing greeting cards and advertisements allows them to use ADJECTIVES and ADVERBS as well as to assess the integrity of contemporary expressions and slogans. Using PRONOUNS, they add clarity; PHRASES let them create variety. VERBS are the focus in writing office memos and appliance manuals with instructions. They write persuasive sentences in letters-to-the-editor. Finally, they understand CLAUSES by writing their own dream job contracts! As legal papers thrive on clauses, people feel more in control of their lives if they understand a rental agreement or car loan form.
Learners share aloud with other classmates and exhibit their writing on display boards or in school papers and newsletters. As each type of word "work" is related to their lives, they want to know how the language can be a career tool.
THE COLOUR OF WORDS texts are being developed to suit the needs of many different levels of learners. Soon versions with American spelling and content, U.K. or Australian content, etc. will be available. As a red NOUN is the same in French, German, or Italian, colour coding to learn a 2nd or 3rd European language is effective. Students who read Asian pictograph/icon languages enjoy how quickly they can understand the patterns of the English sentence. COLOURWORDS will be the computer based examples and exercises on disk or website for colour monitors. Please write me your questions; I am available for talks.
