INTRODUCTION

Wouldn't you like to be understood by your boss, your family, your lover and even yourself? Without words for thinking, your mind cannot conceive of things nor ideas unless you picture them. Picture making is slow. Words are faster and more efficient, especially when sharing them with others over a distance. But words need the pattern of grammar.

GRAMMAR allows you to organize your ideas so that others can follow your thoughts. Grammar is a method of arranging what we already know about the language we use and what we can easily learn about it. Remember, the bigger your vocabulary, the better you think!

This workbook is designed to be completed in 4 to 48 weeks, depending on how much English grammar and vocabulary you already know and how much time per day you wish to use for studying and learning. The amount of time and effort you wish to invest is up to you.

COLOUR CODING the 8 basic parts of language (the 8 types of work that words do in an English sentence) is an easy way to understand the grammar of that sentence. A car or bus has more than 8 parts: windows, doors, bumpers, brakes, gears, gas tanks, engines, steering wheels, horns, lights, radios, tires, exhaust pipes and many more parts. An apprentice mechanic soon learns about dozens of parts.

A sentence has 8 different types of words: nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections. Just as a car or bus can be described in areas: front, back, sides, top or bottom, so the sentence can be discussed or explained in sections: subject, predicate, object, phrase or clause.

These groupings or divisions help you to understand how a car or a sentence works. You, as a person, can do many activities in a day. You can drive a car or ride a bus, eat a hamburger or taco, clean your fingernails or shoes, rake leaves or vacuum a carpet, sing a song or whistle a tune, or do an endless number of things. Words have a more limited performance list or capabilities than you do.

"Hey! In your big cafeteria, careful cooks quickly will fry delicious hamburgers or fish and chips for you. If you like soup with salad, you can choose those, too."

In this textbook, you will soon recognize the patterns of words or English grammar. You can add exercises, activities and future word study lists as you create them to a separate folder or to your binder pages. It is your permanent reference.

COLOUR CODING the language is a new method or system to be adapted for yourself or your students and their level of competence or rate of progress. The chapters are of varying lengths and complexities according to the ideas or concepts involved. Some exercises or activities may be too easy, and some too difficult for any one class or individual learner.

Dictionary work to continuously build vocabularies with meaning, pronunciation and spelling is needed every week. Frequent conversational hours are needed to learn both the pronunciations and rhythms of English words as well as the idioms and casual or current terms of any one geographical area.

Practice sessions of work-related business forms and reports can be substituted for the writing or speaking assignments given in this text. You may wish to study the chapters in whatever order suits your needs and interests. You can design your own course as you know best what skills and information you lack. Enjoy this book!
